NOAH’S ARK CHILDREN’S HOSPICE
Formed in 1999, Noah’s Ark Children’s Hospice is a charity providing support to children and young people who have life-limiting or life-threatening conditions. Located in Barnet, the hospice is a vital resource for families in the local area and throughout North and Central London. By providing clinical, practical and emotional support, Noah’s Ark gives these children and young people the chance to live full lives and achieve their aspirations; while also helping their families to manage their care and face the future with hope after bereavement.
Prior to the construction of its state-of-the-art facility (The Ark) in Barnet, the charity has provided ‘hospice-at-home’ and community-based services. The Ark aims to complement these existing services and enable the charity to expand the scale and quality of its delivery. The journey to this point was the result of a successful collaboration between high profile names in the construction industry, including Sellar Property Group, JLL UK, Pears Property, Squire and Partners, Ramboll, Gensler, Hok, Erith Demolition, Doorview and 8build.
The Ark, which is set in a 7.5-acre nature reserve, has been constructed with its surroundings in mind. This sympathetic approach has provided a connection with the landscape – the building is set on the natural slope of the site, notched into the hillside – that makes The Ark feel more like a home than a hospice, inside and out. Built in the shape of a butterfly – the symbol of the children’s hospice movement – the building has been constructed using a striking oak frame, in keeping with the ‘Noah’s Ark’ theme. Step through its doors and you enter a spacious central atrium that’s flooded with natural light, creating a welcoming sense of warmth and hope in this unique structure.
Having learnt about the amazing work Noah’s Ark Children’s Hospice does across North and Central London, it was an easy decision for Doorview to support the project by providing the timber doors, hardware and access control.
